UPTET 2026 Result: High Court order

On October 28, Allahabad High Court has ordered to remove two disputed questions of UPTET 2026 from evaluation. Now marks will be recalculated on the basis of 148 questions. This can provide relief to the candidates who failed with less marks.

Prayagraj: There is important news for the candidates who have appeared in the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test. Allahabad High Court has directed to make improvements in UPTET 2026 Result. After controversy over two questions of the question paper, the court has asked to exclude them from the evaluation. This may provide a chance to those candidates who could not pass the result declared in August by a small margin.

Why was there controversy over two questions of UPTET 2026?

UPTET 2026 preliminary level exam was held on July 3. After the examination, the Commission had released the provisional answer key, on which objections were sought from the candidates. After examining these objections, the final answer key was released, but a new controversy arose regarding question numbers 36 and 37 of the master set. Actually, earlier one answer each to these two questions was considered correct, whereas in the final answer key, two options each were considered correct.

For question number 36, initially option D was correct, but later both B and D were considered correct. Similarly, in question number 37, initially D was correct, while later A and D were accepted as the correct answers. The Commission had given marks to the candidates who chose any one of these valid options. This was objected to by those candidates who did not get marks in these questions.

The result of the examination was declared on 26 August 2026. In this, four candidates including Vijay Sonkar of Kanpur city could not pass. His marks were just short of the prescribed limit of 82 marks. All four candidates filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court raising questions on the method of evaluation of the Commission. He said that when two answers to a question are considered correct, it is not fair to give marks to only a few candidates.

What did the High Court say, how will the new result be prepared now?

The case was heard by a single bench of Justice Vinod Diwakar. The court, in its decision given on October 28, 2026, said that the eligibility of the candidates cannot be assessed correctly on the basis of a question for which two answers are considered correct. Including such questions in the evaluation of the examination may be against the principle of equal treatment of all candidates.

The Court directed the Commission to exclude question numbers 36 and 37 from the evaluation. After this the exam will be considered on the basis of 148 questions instead of 150. The marks required to pass will also be recalculated according to the prescribed percentage.

The court also made it clear that the benefit of this decision will not be limited only to the four candidates who filed the petition. Other candidates in similar situation should also get its benefit. The Commission has been directed to recount the marks of the affected candidates and make necessary corrections in their results and scorecards.

During the hearing it also came to light that the Commission had already removed question number 38 of the same question paper from evaluation. In such a situation, the court raised the question as to why a different approach was adopted in the case of question numbers 36 and 37.

How much benefit will the failed candidates get?

The biggest hope from the High Court order is given to those candidates who were a little behind the marks required to pass. Removal of questions and recalculation of passing marks may change the eligibility status of some candidates. However, this does not mean that all the candidates who failed earlier will now pass.

One important thing is that the court has not limited the relief only to those candidates who had chosen one of the two valid options of the disputed questions. According to the court, all candidates with similar status should be treated equally. Therefore, candidates choosing wrong option or skipping questions can also get relief under the revised evaluation rules. The final position will be clear only after the calculation of new marks.

This decision has also given hope to those candidates who had earlier accepted their result as final. However, clearing UPTET does not directly mean getting a job as a teacher. This is an essential condition of eligibility in teacher recruitment. To be selected in any recruitment, candidates will have to complete the respective recruitment process and its conditions separately.

At present, the most important thing for the candidates is to keep an eye on the official information related to the revised result. After the date of release of new result is clarified by the Commission, candidates will be able to see their updated scorecard. In case of change in result, candidates should match their old and new marks.
