American fighter jets wreak havoc at sea: On Wednesday, June 10, the oil tanker Setebello was attacked by the US Navy near the coast of Oman, in which two Indian sailors are reported dead. However, one more person is still being reported missing. According to Manoj Yadav, general secretary of the Forward Seamen’s Union of India, two sailors have died and one is missing. Although the Government of India has declared all three missing and the Indian Foreign Ministry condemned the attack but did not directly name America in its statement. However, unlike the American attack on oil tanker MT Marivex on Monday, India openly condemned this attack on Wednesday. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore was on a visit to Kazakhstan. Oman’s army had also safely rescued 24 Indian sailors present on Marivex. America had already banned this ship.

India expressed objection
‘Precision Munitions’ were fired by the US Army on the Setebello ship but 21 Indian sailors present on this ship have been saved. US Central Command claimed that the Palau-flagged oil tanker Setebelo had violated the blockade while carrying oil from Iran. US Central Command said in its statement that despite repeated warnings from American forces, the ship’s crew ignored. And after this an American plane targeted the ship’s engine with precision weapons. Apart from this, the US Army has also released a video of this action.
The loss of lives of Indian sailors in this attack has raised serious questions about the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region and the security of maritime trade routes. The Indian government summoned Jason Meeks, deputy head of the US Embassy, and expressed protest over the incident. The Ministry of External Affairs of India condemned Wednesday’s incident and said that the Indian Embassy in Oman is continuously monitoring the situation. Also maintaining active coordination with Omani authorities for search and rescue operations. According to maritime intelligence website Lloyd’s List, Setebello was among the ships docked near Oman’s port of Duqm.
However, earlier the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations had issued an alert saying that a fire has broken out in the engine room of a tanker about 20 nautical miles north-east of Sohar, Oman and local authorities are assisting in the evacuation of the crew. According to this alert, one person had died on the ship and two others were reported missing. India’s Foreign Ministry said that the continuous attacks on merchant ships in the region are a matter of deep concern. Apart from this, India stressed that targeting of merchant ships and civil infrastructure in the region should stop. In accordance with international law, free and unhindered navigation on sea routes should be restored as soon as possible.

Fear of military conflict increased
According to ship tracking websites, Setebello had previously traveled to China twice, in March and April. It unloaded cargo at Lianyungang port from late April to early May and departed Singapore on 12 May.
