US House Passes Bill Imposing 100% Tariff on India: On PM Modi's birthday (17 September), friend Donald Trump has given a big blow to India. The bill imposing 100% tariff on India has been passed by the US Parliament. The Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act Bill-2026 was passed in the US House late on Wednesday night. 262 votes were cast in favor of the bill and 159 against it. This bill gives the right to impose import duty up to 100% on countries purchasing Russian oil and gas. After being passed by both the houses of the US House, it will now be sent to President Donald Trump for signing. As soon as Trump signs this bill, it will become law and then 00% tariff will be implemented on India.
The bill is officially named the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. In the debate held in the US House on the bill, India and China have been specifically identified as big buyers who may be affected by this provision. Apart from India and China, its impact will also be seen on Turkey, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Slovak Republic, UAE, Singapore, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
However, 100% tariff has not been imposed on India yet. Once the bill becomes law, Trump will have the legal authority to impose such a tariff. After the bill was passed, US MP Michael McCall said that he was proud of the passing of this bill. McCaul claimed the bill would weaken Russia's war capability and help bring President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table. He said that the bill is to increase pressure on Russia as well as China and Iran.
India is at risk of another trade shock
The US believes that Russia's crude oil trade is funding the war against Ukraine. The bill also seeks to give President Trump the authority to impose 100 percent tariffs on India. This bill has added another layer of uncertainty to India-US trade and energy relations. India remains a major buyer of Russian crude amid changes in global energy trade following the Ukraine war. Now a system has been created in the new law due to which heavy tariffs can be imposed on American imports from countries that continuously buy energy from Russia. Therefore, this law itself does not impose any new tariffs on India but gives Trump another legal authority to do so in the future.
Sanctions on Russian officials, banks
Under the proposal, Russian officials, banks as well as tankers of the 'Shadow Fleet' which supplies Russian energy are targeted. The bill also has a provision to direct Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the five largest importers of Russian oil or natural gas. However, exemption has been given to those countries which import less than 15% of Russia's natural gas exports and which have taken necessary steps to reduce this import.
