Venezuela Earthquake: Death Toll May Cross 10,000, Tsunami Alert Issues
Venezuela Earthquake: Massive earthquake hits Venezuela. Two powerful earthquakes hit Venezuela on Wednesday evening, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and human lives. The capital city, Caracas, bore the brunt of the impact, with multiple buildings reduced to rubble. The initial quake, with a magnitude of 7.1, originated west of the Moron region on the Caribbean coast, 168 kilometers (104 miles) away from Caracas, at a depth of 13 kilometers (8 miles).
The USGS (United States Geological Survey) has warned that the death toll could exceed 10,000.Shortly after, a more intense earthquake measuring 7.5 struck, just a minute after the first one. This second quake, with a depth of 10 kilometers, had its epicenter 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of Moron. These seismic events represent some of the most potent simultaneous tremors to hit Venezuela in over a century. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the Virgin Islands, while Dominican Republic officials also put out an alert. However, the alert for Puerto Rico was swiftly rescinded.
Venezuelan authorities estimate 10,000-100,000 people are dead.

In the aftermath of the earthquakes, people evacuated trembling buildings in Caracas, witnessing walls crumble and clouds of dust rising in normally bustling areas. Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello noted that the tremors were felt across various states and highlighted the dire situation in Altamira, Caracas, where structures had collapsed, causing numerous injuries. Cabello stressed the importance of following safety protocols, especially for children and the elderly, urging individuals to check on each other for injuries.
Cabello advised residents to remain outdoors due to the potential risk of aftershocks that could further jeopardize unstable buildings. The government has not disclosed any official casualty figures yet, as it may require some time to compile accurate data. A Caracas resident, Roberto Damas, described the terrifying experience of the earthquakes, recounting how buildings swayed violently, causing chaos and destruction inside. Despite the devastation, he expressed gratitude for being able to escape unharmed.
