Venezuela Earthquake: Huge devastation due to devastating earthquake in Venezuela, fear of death of 1 lakh people

Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Expected Up To One Lakh: Two devastating earthquakes that occurred in Venezuela within just 39 seconds have shaken the entire country. These earthquakes, measuring 7.5 and 7.2 on the Richter scale, have caused massive devastation. The estimates of the US Geological Survey (USGS) have greatly increased the concern around the world. After this terrible natural disaster, relief and rescue work is being carried out very fast.

Venezuela’s interim President Rodriguez has so far confirmed the death of 32 people and injuries to 700 people. However, he himself has expressed grave apprehension that the actual number of casualties could be much higher. People are continuously searching for their family members in the debris of completely razed buildings. This is the most powerful and destructive earthquake to hit this country in more than 100 years.

Scary graph of estimated deaths

USGS, the world’s most trusted American agency in earthquake matters, has given a scary estimate of deaths. According to the new update of the agency, the death toll in this massive earthquake could be 10 thousand to 1 lakh. Apart from this, there is 39 percent possibility that the number of deaths will be between 1 thousand to 10 thousand. According to this model, there is a 37 percent possibility that this figure can easily reach close to 1 lakh.

Earlier estimates and economic losses

Earlier USGS estimates had also stated that there was a 30 percent chance of deaths crossing 1 lakh. At the same time, 44 percent feared that this scary figure would be between 10,000 to 1 lakh. The agency has also made a very important estimate of the huge economic loss caused by this major earthquake. According to this, there could be a huge loss of 1 percent to 4 percent of the country’s total economy (GDP).

How is the loss estimated?

The USGS provides this important and accurate estimate of damage through its pager system (PAGER). The full name of this modern system is Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response which is very accurate. This system first studies earthquake data and gives an initial estimate of the impact and damage of earthquakes. After this it is seen how many people live in dangerous areas with strong earthquake tremors.

Important use of historical data

This modern pager system also uses historical data of previous earthquakes in any country. On the basis of these old data, a very accurate estimate of deaths and huge economic losses is prepared. At present, the figure of 32 deaths and 700 injured given by the government is very preliminary. Officials see a strong possibility of more people being pulled from the debris.
