Venezuela Earthquake: The massive earthquake that occurred yesterday on June 24 in the South American country Venezuela shook the people. Powerful tremors of 7.1 and 7.5 magnitude were felt here, which created an atmosphere of chaos in many areas. The earth shook strongly twice in a span of just 40 seconds. It is being told that this is one of the biggest earthquakes in the country in the last 126 years. Earlier in the year 1900, an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude was recorded in Venezuela.
The intensity of the earthquake was so high that buildings were damaged at many places and some structures collapsed. There have been reports of massive destruction in many areas including the capital Caracas. The administration has declared an emergency and banned many services in view of security. Although a large number of casualties are feared, official figures have not been released yet.
Most affected in Caracas
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the maximum impact of the earthquake was seen in the capital Caracas. After the strong tremors, people came out of their homes and offices out of fear and gathered on the streets. The epicenter of the earthquake is said to be about 23 kilometers north-west of Yumare city. This area is located close to many important oil refineries of the country. Videos from Caracas showed many buildings being damaged, walls collapsing and clouds of dust rising into the air.
Earthquake tremors felt till Colombia
The impact of this powerful earthquake in Venezuela was felt even in the neighboring country Colombia. In an atmosphere of fear, many people moved to safe places with their children and pets.
In the video that surfaced on social media, people were seen running towards open areas in panic. At the same time, the US Tsunami Warning Center had issued a tsunami alert for Puerto Rico, American and British Virgin Islands, as well as Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire, which were later withdrawn.
An earthquake of 6.9 magnitude occurred in Japan also (Japan Earthquake)
Meanwhile, an earthquake of 6.9 magnitude was also recorded on the east coast of Honshu island of Japan. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of about 50 kilometers near the coast of Iwate Prefecture.
Its tremors were felt most in Aomori province. After the earthquake, Tohoku Electric Power Company conducted safety checks at the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant and the closed Higashidori Nuclear Plant. According to officials, initial investigation has not revealed any major loss.
