World-renowned mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja died in a massive avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). His adventure company, Elite Exped, confirmed the tragic incident through a social media post.
The company stated that Nirmal Purja and other members of the expedition, who went missing after the avalanche, are unlikely to survive. His trusted companions, Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa, along with other climbers, have also been confirmed dead.
Avalanche on Broad Peak
Broad Peak, the world’s 12th highest mountain, is located in the Karakoram mountain range, near the border between Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and China. The avalanche occurred on the mountain’s West Ridge route at an altitude of approximately 21,600 to 21,850 feet. Nirmal Purja and his team went missing after the accident.
