Vietnam’s top leader To Lam to pay state visit to India

General Secretary of the Communist Party Central Committee and President of Vietnam To Lam is scheduled to pay a state visit to India from May 5-7.

The visit will be made at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

Vietnam and India established diplomatic relations in 1972 and elevated ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2016. Bilateral relations have made strong progress over the past decade.

According to customs department data, trade between Vietnam and India reached a record $16.46 billion in 2025 after rising by 10.5% for the year.

The two sides have agreed to raise trade and investment to $30 billion by 2030. They plan to expand cooperation in defense and security, technology, particularly core technologies, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, innovation, rare earth mining and processing, and IT training and workforce development.

Indian investors have 378 projects in Vietnam worth more than $1 billion, with the main sectors being energy, mineral and agricultural processing (coffee, tea, sugar), information technology, auto components, pharmaceuticals, hotels, and infrastructure.
