Patiala- Punjab Vigilance Bureau, during its drive against corruption in the state, has arrested Panchayat Secretary Gurjant Singh, posted at BDPO office Bhunarheri, District Patiala, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000. Giving this information here today, a spokesperson of the State Vigilance Bureau said that the said accused has been arrested on the basis of the complaint of a resident of village Bhatian, district Patiala.
He said the complainant alleged that the gram panchayat had passed proposals for renovation and construction of a local dharamshala and community hall. Panchayat Secretary Gurjant Singh had demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000 for further action on these proposals and development works. The accused Panchayat Secretary said that a part of this bribe amount would be distributed to the Gram Panchayat Panches for signing the proposals.
Not wanting to pay bribe, the complainant approached Vigilance Bureau Patiala. Acting on his complaint, the Vigilance Bureau team laid a trap and arrested the accused Panchayat Secretary red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the complainant in the presence of two government witnesses.
In this regard, a case has been registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act at Vigilance Bureau Police Station Patiala and further investigation of the case is underway.
