‘Want reservation for women, but…’ Mallikarjun Kharge made serious allegations against the government, know what he said

New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has spoken openly on women’s reservation today, Wednesday 15 April. He clarified that the opposition is not against women’s reservation, but they are strongly opposing the way the government is bringing the bill.

Statement after India Block meeting

Immediately after the India Block meeting, Kharge said that all the opposition parties are in favor of the Women’s Reservation Bill. He said, “We are not against women’s reservation, but we oppose the way the government is bringing this bill. It is completely politically motivated.”

Kharge alleged that the government is doing this to suppress the opposition parties. He said that the way of including delimitation in the bill is wrong.

Questions on delimitation and census

Kharge further said that the government has not even conducted the census yet. Nevertheless the limitation has been added to the bill. He warned that due to this, the powers of the Constitution are going into the hands of the executive.

He said, “Most of the powers that should be with Parliament and institutions are being given to the government so that it can change the boundaries at any time.” Giving the example of Assam and Jammu and Kashmir, Kharge said that the government has already betrayed the opposition.

Women’s Reservation Bill and expansion of parliamentary seats were discussed in detail in the meeting. All parties decided that they will unite in Parliament and oppose this bill. Kharge stressed that all the earlier amendments should be implemented.

Opposition’s demand regarding women’s reservation bill

The main demand of the opposition is that the Women’s Reservation Bill should be brought without any limitations. They want the government to first complete the census and then present the bill properly. This statement of Kharge has come at a time when the debate regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill has intensified in the Parliament. The opposition is accusing the government of misusing the bill for political gains.
