Health Desk. The liver is one of the body’s most vital organs. It converts food into energy, removes toxins from the body, aids digestion, and stores many essential nutrients. However, irregular eating habits, excessive junk food consumption, alcohol consumption, and a sedentary lifestyle can negatively impact the liver. According to health experts, adopting a few simple habits can help maintain long-term liver health.
1. Eat a balanced and nutritious diet
To maintain a healthy liver, include green vegetables, seasonal fruits, whole grains, pulses, and adequate protein in your diet. Limit fried, overly sweet, and processed foods. A balanced diet reduces excess stress on the liver.
2. Engage in daily physical activity
At least 30 minutes of brisk walking, yoga, cycling, or light exercise every day can help control weight and reduce the risk of problems like fatty liver. Regular exercise is considered beneficial for the entire body as well as the liver.
3. Drink enough water
Keeping the body hydrated helps the liver function normally. Drinking adequate amounts of water throughout the day improves many bodily processes. However, the belief that simply drinking more water “detoxes” the liver is incorrect.
4. Avoid alcohol and smoking
Excessive alcohol consumption can cause serious damage to the liver and, over time, increase the risk of diseases like fatty liver, hepatitis, or cirrhosis. Smoking is also detrimental to overall health. Avoiding these is an important step to protect your liver.
5. Get regular health checkups
If you have diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, or any other liver-related problems, schedule regular checkups with your doctor. If necessary, tests like liver function tests (LFTs) can diagnose your liver condition. Do not take any medication for a long time without medical advice.
