The Warriors made an attempt to acquire Anthony Davis from the Wizardsbelieving their chances of signing LeBron James would improve if they added his former Lakers teammate and fellow Klutch Sports client, sources tell Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints. However, a team source described Washington’s asking price as “unreasonable,” and the talks never progressed past the initial contact.
Siegel also hears that Golden State reached out to the Celtics regarding Jaylen Brown but Boston’s front office had no interest in any of the Warriors’ trade assets and refused to listen to any offers. Siegel adds that Golden State would have been willing to part with Jimmy Butler whom they’ve preferred to keep out of trade discussions, along with draft capital to acquire Davis or Brown.
Sources also told Siegel that it became clear during the first week of the Las Vegas Summer League that James intended to sign with an Eastern Conference team rather than remaining close to his home in California. James reportedly had “genuine interest” in joining the Warriors after talking to Stephen Curry over the phone and Draymond Green in person, but Siegel’s sources say Golden State wasn’t viewed as a legitimate title contender because Curry is its only reliable scorer and James didn’t want to wait for Butler to recover from his ACL tear.

- Siegel hears that Golden State has reached out multiple times to the Pelicans with an offer of two first-round picks for Trey Murphy III. However, New Orleans hasn’t lowered its asking price of three first-rounders plus a young player who can be part of the core for the future, which the Warriors aren’t able to offer.
- Curry, who has a $62.6MM expiring contract for the upcoming season, will be able to get “whatever deal he wants” when he becomes extension eligible on August 6, Siegel states. It could be a one- or two-year contract, and Siegel suggests that Curry can name his price. Green could re-sign for one year at the $27.7MM figure that he turned down in his player option, Siegel adds, or he could work out a multi-year deal that keeps him on the same timeline as Curry and coach Steve Kerr.
- Sources tell Siegel that the Warriors and Gary Payton II have mutual interest in a veteran’s minimum contract.
- Golden State has contacted representatives for DeMar DeRozan but Siegel’s sources say he’s unlikely to accept a minimum offer when he can get more money from other teams.
- The Warriors are no longer trying to acquire Michael Porter Jr. from the Nets. according to Siegel. He states that the team was exploring a deal before the trade deadline, but has now “moved on.”
- Extension talks are expected next month with Brandin Pod Ziemia and a new deal is likely to have an average annual value in the $24MM range, Siegel adds.
