Monsoon has once again gained full momentum in most parts of the country. According to the latest bulletin of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), there will be a major change in the weather in the next few hours due to the active monsoon trough line over North-West India and Central India and the cyclonic circulation formed near the Bay of Bengal.

The Meteorological Department has issued yellow and orange alerts of moderate to heavy rainfall in more than 10 states of North India, Central India and Eastern states including the national capital Delhi. There is a possibility of strong winds blowing at a speed of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour and lightning in many areas.

After the sultry heat of the last two days, the weather pattern is about to change in the capital Delhi and the surrounding NCR regions—Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad:

• Yellow alert issued: The Meteorological Department has predicted intermittent moderate to heavy rain in Delhi-NCR for the next 24 to 36 hours.

• Drop in temperature: Due to the effect of rain and cold winds, the maximum day temperature may drop by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius, due to which the temperature will come down to around 31 to 32 degrees Celsius.

• Fear of waterlogging and traffic jam: A warning has been issued regarding water logging in low-lying areas and disruption of traffic on roads during peak traffic hours.

According to the Meteorological Department, the impact of seasonal activities will be seen in different parts of the country as follows:

• Uttar Pradesh (UP): There is an alert of heavy rain in many districts of western and eastern Uttar Pradesh. There is a possibility of moderate to heavy showers with cloud movement in Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Meerut and Moradabad. Special warning has been given regarding lightning strike in the Terai areas.

• Bihar: Monsoon is completely kind in the areas of capital Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur and Seemanchal. There is an orange alert for torrential rains with thunderstorms and lightning in many districts. Farmers and common people have been advised to avoid going out in the open.

• Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh: There is a danger of landslides and rise in the water level of rivers due to heavy rains in the hilly states. Tourists have been asked to remain alert on sensitive routes in Dehradun, Nainital, Chamoli, Shimla and Mandi.

• Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh: Heavy rain with thunder and lightning is expected in Eastern Rajasthan (Jaipur, Kota, Bharatpur) and Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur and Indore divisions of Madhya Pradesh.

• Maharashtra and Gujarat: Rain activities along with strong winds are likely to continue over coastal Konkan, Mumbai and South Gujarat.

According to meteorologists, this activity in the last phase of the monsoon season is the result of the combination of two major weather systems (Synoptic Systems):

1. General position of monsoon trough: The monsoon trough is moving towards the north-west from its normal position, due to which moist south-westerly winds are continuously entering the plains.

2. Low-pressure system: The cyclonic circulation over central India and adjacent parts of the Bay of Bengal is pulling moisture from the Arabian Sea, due to which the density of clouds has increased over the plains.

In view of the changing weather patterns and the threat of lightning, disaster management agencies have issued guidelines for citizens:

• Do not under any circumstances take shelter in open fields, under trees or near electric poles during thunderstorms and lightning.

• Unplug electronic devices at home and drive slowly on waterlogged roads.

• Tourists traveling to hilly areas must check local weather updates and administration alerts before going on landslide-prone routes.
