West Bengal Election: Voting for the first phase of assembly elections 2026 in West Bengal continues on Thursday. In this phase, voting is being held on 152 seats in 16 districts of the state. More than 44 thousand booths have been made for voting, out of which 7,384 have been kept in the highly sensitive category. About 3 crore 60 lakh voters will exercise their franchise in this phase. Voting is taking place at a total of 44,376 booths, which also includes around 3,000 auxiliary booths. The special thing is that 5,444 booths are being operated entirely by women personnel, while 207 booths have been developed as model booths. The main contest in this phase is believed to be between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. After the first phase, the second phase of voting will be held next Wednesday. A total of 1,478 candidates are trying their luck in the first phase.

Meanwhile, while addressing the Vijay Sankalp Sabha organized in Krishnanagar on Thursday to campaign for the second phase of elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi fiercely targeted Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In his speech, PM Modi launched a scathing attack on the state’s policies, election environment and recent controversies.

Political jibe at Jhalmuri

The Prime Minister recently took a dig at the controversy over eating Jhalmuri in West Bengal, saying, “I have eaten Jhalmuri, but TMC is feeling the chilliness.” In fact, on this issue, Mamata Banerjee had earlier accused the PM that it was a “drama” and it was done for publicity. He had said that preparations were made in advance and cameras were installed in the shop.

“Sweets and Jhalmuri will also be distributed on May 4th.”

PM Modi claimed in his speech that BJP’s victory will be celebrated in the state on May 4. He said that on that day “sweets and jhalmuri will also be distributed.” This is being seen as confidence in BJP’s possible victory. The Prime Minister also spoke on the issue of election violence and said that this is the first time in the last 50 years that relatively less violence has been seen in West Bengal. He praised the Election Commission for this. In his address, PM Modi thanked the voters who participated in the first phase of voting and appealed to the people to create a new record of voting this time. A large number of people were present in the rally and the Prime Minister once again expressed confidence in the change of power in the state.
