What are Difference Adaptation Remake and Inspired: In the world of films, there are many ways to bring a story to the screen. Sometimes the film is based on a book or novel, and sometimes the story of the old film is recreated with new actors. Apart from this, sometimes a completely new film is made by taking just one idea from a story or incident. To understand these different methods, words like adaptation, remake and inspired are used. Let us understand their differences in detail.
What is called an adaptation film?
First of all let us understand adoption. In simple language, when an already existing composition is used as a base and presented in the form of a film, it is called adaptation. This composition can be a book, novel, story, play, comic or any other literary work. Here the writer making the film does not bring the original creation on the screen as it is. Changes can be made in the story as per the requirement of the film. In a book, information about a character can be given in many pages, but in a film, the same thing has to be told through a few scenes or dialogues. That is, in adaptation the basic structure is the basis, but the film is its cinematic adaptation.
What can be changed in adoption?
While making a film based on a book, the length of the story can be reduced. Some characters can be removed, some new scenes can be added and the sequence of events can also be changed. For example, in a novel the story continues for many years, but in a film the duration is limited. Therefore the director and writer choose the most important parts of the story. This is the reason why readers of the book often say after watching the film that the entire story of the book is not shown in it. This does not mean that the film is not an adaptation. Rather, adaptation means adapting the original work in a different way.
What is called a remake film?
Now understand the remake. Remake means a film made again on the same story based on an already made film. In this, the story of the old film, main incident, role of characters and sometimes even important scenes can be seen in a new form. However, the cast, language, location, music and presentation may change in the new film. Remakes are seen a lot especially in the Indian film industry. After the success of a film in one industry, remakes of the same are often made in other industries as well. However, it may be a new artist. For example, the story of a film from a South industry can be remade for the Hindi audience. Similarly, a Hindi film can be remade in another language.
The biggest difference between remake and adaptation
This is where most of the confusion occurs regarding both. In adaptation, the source can be a book, story, play or other composition. Whereas in remake the source is an already made film. That means if a film is made based on a novel, then it is an adaptation. If an old film is remade with new actors, it is called a remake. The easiest way to remember this difference is that if a film is made from a book or other work, it is called an adaptation. At the same time, when a new film is made from an old film, it is called a remake.
What is an inspired film?
Now comes the third and most different category, 'Inspired'. When the story of a film is said to be inspired by another film, event, book, character or idea, but the new film does not retell it in the same form of the story, then it can be called inspired. Here inspiration can be taken from the basic idea, but the story, characters, incidents and scenes shown in it may be different. For example, the idea of revenge in a film may be similar to any other story, but the characters, place, incident and the entire script may be different. In such a situation, it would not be right to directly call it a remake.
Is it easy for makers to make remakes?
The biggest advantage of the remake is that the original story has already proven to be a success among the audience. The producer gets a story whose cinematic structure already exists. But this does not mean that the success of the remake is certain. If people have seen the old film, then they want something new in the new film. If the casting, screenplay, music and direction of the actors are weak then the remake may fail.
Biggest challenges of making an adaptation film?
The biggest challenge in adaptation is to present it in the form of a film while maintaining the soul of the original work. The reader of the book has complete freedom of fiction. In a film, the director has to show everything on the screen. Therefore many times some parts of the original creation have to be removed. This is the reason why a good book does not automatically become a good film adaptation.
Difference between inspired and copy
Let us tell you that the word inspired is used when a new work is prepared by taking inspiration from the original idea. But if the story, characters, incidents and scenes of another film are lifted in almost the same manner, then it would not be right to simply call it 'inspired'. This is where the question regarding copyright also arises. Many times allegations have been made regarding copying of films and debate also starts that it is not a copy but an inspiration. In such a situation, if an original creator has complete evidence that his work has been copied, then he can file a copyright case. Therefore, it becomes very important to understand the difference between inspired and copied.
