What is Liquid Cooling? New technology to cool AI data centers, saving electricity and water

Tezzbuzz Desk- With the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the need for large data centers and AI factories is increasing around the world. The powerful GPUs and supercomputers present in these centers continuously process heavy data, which generates excessive heat. Traditional air cooling systems sometimes prove unsuccessful in controlling this heat. In such a situation, liquid cooling as a new and more effective technology. (Liquid Cooling) Has come forward.

What is Liquid Cooling Technology?

Liquid cooling is an advanced thermal management system that uses special fluids to control the heat of servers and chips in a data center. This liquid (dielectric liquid) absorbs heat directly from the hot components and expels it.

Liquids have a much greater ability to absorb heat than air, so this technique is considered extremely effective for modern AI hardware.

How does Liquid Cooling system work?

The liquid cooling system works on a closed-loop circulation. In this process:

  • The cooled liquid reaches the metal plates of the GPU and server through pipes.
  • This liquid absorbs the heat of the chips
  • The heated liquid is sent to the heat exchanger
  • there it is cooled again
  • Then this process is repeated continuously

In this entire system the liquid does not go out, due to which it is continuously recycled.

Why is Liquid Cooling necessary in AI data centers?

AI models and high-performance computing systems consume a lot of power and generate a lot of heat. According to estimates, about 40% of the total power consumption of a data center goes to the cooling system alone.

Liquid cooling reduces this consumption to a great extent, because it does not require large air conditioning systems and fans.

Big change in NVIDIA’s new technology

NVIDIA’s Rubin Generation AI infrastructure is believed to be the world’s first 100% liquid cooling based system. In this, every chip and networking component is cooled directly by liquid.

According to the company, this design makes data centers more energy efficient and environment friendly.

How is water and electricity saved?

Evaporative cooling systems were used in old data centers, in which water turned into steam and evaporated into the atmosphere. This consumed huge amounts of water.

Whereas in liquid cooling:

  • water does not evaporate
  • The system runs in a completely closed loop
  • Same liquid is used again and again

Apart from this, the liquid is circulated through small pumps, which also reduces power consumption.

Major advantages of liquid cooling

  • reduction in power consumption
  • water saving
  • better heat management
  • Improving data center efficiency
  • Stability to High-Performance AI Systems

Liquid cooling technology can prove to be very important for AI and data center industry in the future. It not only saves energy but also helps in reducing environmental impact. In the growing digital world, this technology is becoming a necessity of the future.
