The month of Muharram is one of the holiest months in the Muslim religion. This month is considered to mark the beginning of the new year in Islam. The 10th day of this month is called Ashura. According to religious beliefs, on this day Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed, was martyred in the battle of Karbala. What to do in Muharram?
1. To lay down – People of Muslim religion keep Faka on the 10th day of this month. Faka means fasting. People remember the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. It is believed that fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram is considered virtuous.
2. Pray – This month people should offer more Namaz than normal days and remember Allah as much as possible.
3. Follow traditions – Many Shia Muslims do not comb their hair or trim their beard during Muharram. On the day of Ashura, people eat the food of Shikni i.e. sorrow after offering Asr Namaz.
4. Do good – This month, people should offer more Namaz than usual and remember Allah as much as possible. Also, one should do virtuous deeds, due to which people get rewards.
5. Give charity – People should donate to the needy in the month of Muharram. The tradition of giving charity should be adopted in all four holy months. People should be fed Bhandara especially on the occasion of Ashura.

What not to do?
1. Do not commit atrocities According to religious beliefs, people should not commit oppression and injustice to others this month. This means that people should avoid lies, deception, violence and oppression of any kind. Religious experts believe that the crimes committed during these four holy months are considered more sinful than on normal days. Therefore one should avoid committing sins.
2. Do not use violence – According to Muslim religion, Muharram, Rajab, Zul-Qada and Zul-Hijja are considered the holiest months. According to religious belief, people should avoid violence and war during these four months. Peace and tranquility have also been emphasized in Surah Al-Baqarah of the Quran.
