Religious significance of Nirjala Ekadashi

According to mythology, during the Mahabharata period, Bhimsen among the Pandavas found it difficult to live without food. Then Maharishi Vedvyas advised him to observe the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi only once in a year. It is said that due to the effect of this fast, he attained the same virtue as on all Ekadashis. It is believed that by observing Nirjala Ekadashi properly, sins are destroyed, blessings of Lord Vishnu are received and happiness, peace and prosperity come in life. Charity is also given special importance on this day.

The main rule of Nirjala Ekadashi is considered to be renunciation of water. During this fast, water is not drunk throughout the day and night. Therefore, devotees observing fast should avoid consuming water. However, in case of health related problems, it is considered appropriate to observe the fast as per one’s capacity and medical advice.

2. Avoid eating grains and rice

Consumption of food is considered prohibited on the day of Ekadashi. Especially rice should not be consumed. According to religious beliefs, consuming food on this day can reduce the importance of fasting. Therefore, following the rules of fasting and maintaining distance from food is considered auspicious.

3. Do not break basil leaves

Tulsi has special importance in the worship of Lord Vishnu, but plucking Tulsi leaves on the day of Ekadashi is not considered appropriate. Therefore, the basil leaves required for the puja should be plucked and kept a day in advance. There is a religious belief that Tulsi Mata gets rest on Ekadashi.

4. Stay away from sensual things and intoxication

Nirjala Ekadashi is considered to be the day of self-control and spiritual practice. In such a situation, one should not consume non-vegetarian food, garlic, onion, alcohol, tobacco and other intoxicants. Adopting virtuous thoughts and holy conduct on this day is considered auspicious.

5. Avoid anger, lies and disputes

Fasting is not only considered a means of giving up food, but also a means of purification of mind and behavior. Therefore, it is not considered appropriate to get angry, lie, insult someone or get into unnecessary disputes on this day. Remembering Lord Vishnu, chanting bhajans and spending the day with positive thoughts is considered more fruitful.
