Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene resigned as the head coach of Mumbai Indians on Saturday (October 17). Jayawardene had almost a 10-year relationship with the five-time IPL champion franchise. He served as head coach for two terms. Meanwhile, he was also the 'Global Head of Performance' of MI franchise.
Jayawardene led Mumbai Indians to three IPL titles (2017, 2019 and 2020) in his first coaching stint. He was promoted to the position of 'Global Head of Performance' in 2022. Just before the 2025 season, he again became the head coach but this time he could not do the same charisma as before and then he decided to part ways with Mumbai Indians with mutual consent. The auction for IPL 2027 is to be held in December. Before this, Mumbai Indians will have to find their head coach. Let us know on whom Mumbai Indians franchise can bet.

Former Australian batsman Michael Hussey recently parted ways with the coaching staff of Chennai Super Kings. He was offered a role in the England setup alongside Stephen Fleming but turned it down. According to reports, Hussey has contacted several IPL franchises. He can be the perfect replacement for Jayawardene for Mumbai Indians. Hussey has also played for this franchise in the 2014 season.
Adrian Birrell
South African Adrian Birrell is currently one of the most successful franchise coaches in the world. Birrell has made Sunrisers Eastern Cape champion in the South African League SA20 three times in four seasons. This year, he also took Sunrisers Leeds Women to the finals in England's 'The Hundred' League. However, Mumbai Indians may have to work a little harder to bring him into the IPL, because he is not currently interested in coaching in the IPL.
