What was the whole matter?
On July 23rd, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a video addressing students and youth. In this address, he promised strict laws against paper leaks. The video was viewed by millions, but on the morning of July 28th, it suddenly disappeared from Facebook. Upon opening the video, users saw a notice stating that access to the content had been restricted due to a legal request. This sparked a flood of questions on social media, and several political leaders also responded.
Why did Meta restore the video?
Following the controversy, Meta issued a statement stating that the video was mistakenly removed and has now been fully restored. The company further clarified that this was not due to any legal request, but rather a temporary technical glitch. Meta also clarified that every video on the platform is evaluated based on its Community Standards and Advertising Standards. If the content does not violate these rules, it is not removed.
For what reasons might Facebook remove videos?
Regarding Meta’s rules, a video may be removed if it contains graphic violence, hate speech, obscenity, illegal activities, promotion of dangerous organizations, or violations of privacy. Repeated violations result in a strike on the account, and repeated violations may result in the removal of the page or account.
Furthermore, reposting someone else’s video without any changes or credit may result in reduced reach or monetization. However, Meta may also apply certain exceptions in cases of public interest.
How different are YouTube’s rules?
YouTube also takes action based on its Community Guidelines. Strict action is taken on the platform against violence, hate speech, cyberattacks, spam, fake views, and videos re-uploaded without modifications. Three strikes within 90 days can result in a channel being permanently suspended. Creators are required to disclose any paid promotions, sponsorships, or product placements in a video. However, promotions related to illegal goods, unlicensed pharmaceuticals, hacking tools, and online gambling are not permitted.
Important Parliamentary Committee Meeting on August 3
Amidst this ongoing development, the Parliamentary IT and Communications Committee has summoned representatives from Meta, X, Google, and Snapchat on August 3. The meeting will discuss key issues such as digital privacy, online safety for women and children, data protection for ordinary citizens, and compliance by social media companies with Indian laws. In such a situation, this matter is not limited to just one video, but is also raising big questions on the transparency and content moderation system of social media platforms.
