Many drivers modify their cars to make them look different, attractive and luxurious on the road. However, as per the Motor Vehicles Act and the Supreme Court order, unauthorized modifications made to cars are illegal. It is very important to understand which modifications to cars are legal in Maharashtra and which modifications can lead to direct penalty action or cancellation of RC from the RTO.
What is legal ?
According to RTO rules, modifications that do not compromise the original design and safety of the vehicle are considered completely legal:
- Interior and accessories: It is legal to replace seat covers inside the car, install an infotainment touchscreen or music system, and install roof rails, door protectors, and visors.
- Tires and Alloy Wheels: Alloy wheels or tires can only be replaced within the size specified by the car manufacturer.
- Changing the color of the car: The original color of the car can be changed, but for this, it is mandatory to obtain prior permission from the RTO and record the new color on the RC.
- CNG Kit: If a government-approved CNG kit is installed in a petrol car and recorded in the RC book, it becomes valid.

What is illegal ?
Modifications that pose a risk to the safety of the vehicle or the environment are completely illegal:
- Modifications to the chassis and body structure: It is illegal to change the length, width, or ground clearance of a car, or to modify it by cutting the chassis.
- Loud exhaust : Removing the company’s original silencer and installing a loud exhaust or removing a catalytic converter is a serious offense.
- Bright Lights : It is prohibited to use extremely bright headlights or illegal LED lights that dazzle the eyes of the driver in front.
- Dark glass : Applying dark black film on car windows is prohibited.

What happens if the rules are violated ?
If any illegal modification is found, the RTO and traffic police can impose a hefty fine. Not only that, the vehicle’s registration can be suspended or cancelled and the vehicle can also be seized. Therefore, it is advisable to check the RTO rules before making any major modifications to the car.
