Desk : Low blood pressure is often associated with weakness or general discomfort, but in some situations a sudden drop in BP can be a sign of a serious problem. Especially when a person stands up after sitting or lying down for a long time and within a few minutes he starts feeling dizziness, weakness or blurred vision, then it can be called postural hypotension.
In postural hypotension, blood pressure decreases rapidly after changing the position of the body. When standing, due to gravity, some part of the blood goes towards the legs. In such a situation, if the body is not able to normalize blood circulation fast enough, the supply of blood and oxygen to the brain may be affected. Usually this discomfort can be felt within a few minutes of standing up.
Symptoms may include dizziness, lightheadedness, confusion, falls, nausea, blurred vision, trouble concentrating, cold hands and feet, sweating, rapid breathing, and extreme fatigue. Older people may also be at increased risk of injury due to sudden dizziness and falls.
There can be many different reasons behind low blood pressure. These may include conditions like heart problems, low blood count in the body, serious infections, hormonal disturbances and severe allergic reactions. Therefore, it is important to seek medical advice if BP decreases repeatedly or symptoms like dizziness and fainting occur along with it.
To avoid the problem of postural hypotension, changes in some daily habits can be helpful. It may be helpful to keep your head slightly elevated while sleeping, gradually change position from lying to sitting and then to standing, and to use the bed or some strong support when getting up. Light exercise and stretching can also be done to maintain blood circulation in the legs.
Apart from this, one should avoid bending down suddenly after getting up from the bed. If something is lying down, a tool with a long handle can be used instead of bending suddenly to pick it up. If the problem of dizziness, fainting or low blood pressure is recurring, then it is important to get examined and consulted by a doctor to find out its cause.
