Will old cases pending in the Supreme Court be resolved? CJI handed over responsibility to 4 benches

The Chief Justice of the country (CJI) Surya Kant has made special arrangements to dispose of the oldest pending cases of the Supreme Court quickly. He has ordered the formation of four separate benches, whose work will be to hear only old civil and criminal cases.

The objective of the bench is to expeditiously dispose of more than 800 oldest cases. According to a report in Hindustan Times, CJI Surya Kant said that this step has been taken so that continuous attention can be given to the cases pending for many years.

The biggest job of the judiciary is not just to give decision, but to give decision within stipulated time, so that people have faith in the law. People face problems due to old cases being pending for a long time, hence now they will be given priority.

Who got the responsibility of fast track hearing?

This system has come into effect from July 13. Two benches of Justice PK Mishra and Justice SVN Bhatti will hear only the oldest civil cases on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, similarly two benches of Justice Manoj Mishra and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan will hear old criminal cases. These benches have to focus only on old cases, no other work will be assigned.

Every bench has 200 old cases

About 200 old cases have been assigned to each bench. This is said to be the first administrative reform implemented by CJI Surya Kant. There are currently about 96 thousand cases pending in the Supreme Court, many of which are decades old.

Why is this exercise happening now?

CJI Surya Kant says that disposal of old pending cases will further increase people’s faith in the justice system, the functioning of the court will improve and the number of pending cases will reduce.
