Health Desk. Aging is a normal process, but keeping the body active and healthy as we age largely depends on everyday habits. After the age of 50, habits like regular exercise, balanced diet and adequate sleep become especially important for men. Some easy changes can help maintain fitness in the long run.
1. Do some exercise every day
Brisk walking, cycling, swimming or light exercise can be included in the daily routine. It is also considered useful to do muscle strengthening exercises at least two days a week. Decide the intensity of exercise according to your age and physical ability.
2. Increase protein and fiber in your diet
Make pulses, gram, paneer, curd, egg, fish or other nutritious protein sources part of the meal. Along with this, take vegetables, fruits, whole grains and enough fiber. It is better to limit too much fried and too sweet food.
3. Do not ignore sleep
Good sleep is essential for body recovery and daily energy. Try to sleep and wake up at approximately the same time every day. Reducing mobile or other screen use before bed can also help maintain a better sleep routine.
4. Keep an eye on your weight and waist
It can be easy to gain weight if physical activity decreases after 50. Therefore, keep an eye on your weight with regular walking and balanced diet. Instead of sitting for a long time, it is also a good habit to get up and walk for a while.
5. Reduce stress and get regular checkups
Chronic stress can also affect lifestyle and sleep. Activities like yoga, meditation, hobbies or spending time with family can help manage stress. Also, according to age, keep getting blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and other important health checkups done as per doctor's advice.
