How many votes?

On Friday, the Lok Sabha voted on three bills, namely the ‘Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill, 2026’. 298 votes were cast in favor of this bill, while 230 votes were cast against it. However, to pass the bill, two-thirds of the total number of Members of Parliament (MPs) present in the House was required. It is important to mention here that the passage of any Constitution Amendment Bill requires a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha.

However, due to non-passage of the Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill, 2026, other subsequent bills could not move forward. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiran Rijiju clarified that due to the failure to pass the Constitution Amendment Bill, two other bills related to it cannot be taken further.

The Women’s Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill were heavily debated in the Lok Sabha. The opposition had consistently opposed these legal measures. On Friday, responding to the debate on the bill, Home Minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on the opposition. He claimed that the ‘INDIA’ alliance was not only opposing the delimitation process, but was mainly opposing the ‘Women’s Reservation Bill’. After Amit Shah’s speech, the Lok Sabha voted on the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill. However, these bills failed to reach the two-thirds majority required for passage.
