The wait for cricket fans is finally over for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The ICC has named 12 historic and new venues for this grand tournament. This prestigious tournament, which will be played jointly in these three countries, will not only showcase the thrill of the game, but will also see a new format of the competition.
This year, the largest part of the One Day World Cup (2027 ODI World Cup) will be held in South Africa. The African country is all set to host matches in stadiums across eight cities. The historic Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Centurion Stadium in Tshwane, the picturesque Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town and Kingsmead Stadium in Durban will once again witness unforgettable moments of the World Cup. In addition, the world’s top teams will clash at St. George’s Park in Gweru, Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, Boland Park in Paarl and Buffalo Park in Kugompo.
South Africa’s rich hosting history
This is not South Africa’s first experience. They co-hosted the ODI World Cup for the first time in 2003. Since then, the country has successfully hosted major ICC tournaments such as the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023 and the Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2020 and 2024.
The grand event will be held at three stadiums in Zimbabwe
On the other hand, Zimbabwe, another strong country on the African continent, has been given three venues. The famous Harare Sports Club in the capital Harare, the Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo and the new Phale Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium, built in the scenic surroundings of Victoria Falls, will host several important matches. Zimbabwe co-hosted the World Cup with South Africa in 2003, so fans here will get a chance to experience the same excitement again.
Namibia to create history
The most unique and historic feature of this tournament is Namibia’s participation. Namibia is hosting a senior ICC tournament for the first time. The Namibia Cricket Ground in the capital Windhoek has been chosen for this grand event, which will be recorded in the golden pages of Namibian cricket history. Namibia and Zimbabwe successfully hosted the Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup this year.
57 matches and a new exciting format
If we look at the structure and math of the tournament, the 2027 World Cup will be a long and exciting battle of 57 matches. A completely new format has been introduced, which will keep the audience engaged from start to finish.
The main stage will begin with the Super Series.
The tournament will begin with the ‘Super Series’, which will be a match between the three teams ranked 12th to 14th. The team that wins this series will qualify for the main tournament. The 12 main teams will then be divided into two groups of six teams each. In the ‘league stage’, each team will play one match against the other teams in its group. A total of 30 matches will be played in this initial stage alone.
Tough competition in the ‘Super 7’ round
After the league stage is over, the top three teams from each group and the next best performing team from both groups, i.e. a total of seven teams, will advance to the next round. This will be called the ‘Super 7’ stage. In the Super 7, all seven teams will play a total of 21 round-robin matches, with every point being fiercely contested.
Semi-finals and title fight
After the excitement of the Super 7 is over, the top four teams in the points table will qualify for the semi-finals. The top team in the points table will face the fourth-placed team in the first semi-final, while the second and third-placed teams will play each other in the second semi-final. The winners of these two matches will play the final match to determine the new king of cricket.
