India reiterated its strong stance on attacks on commercial vessels and Indian sailors in the Black Sea. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Tsibiha by telephone on Thursday and categorically stated that targeting commercial vessels by any side is unacceptable. He stated that India unequivocally condemns all such attacks.
During the conversation between the two leaders, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the security situation in the Black Sea, and peace efforts were also discussed in detail.
Concern expressed over the safety of Indian sailors
In recent days, foreign-flagged merchant vessels have also been affected by attacks in the Black Sea region. Five Indian sailors have died in these incidents, while two others are still missing. Furthermore, reports have emerged that 13 Indian sailors are stranded in the Ukrainian port of Chornomorsk.
Following the conversation, Jaishankar posted on social media that he raised the issue of attacks on Indian sailors and commercial vessels with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister. He stated that such attacks, from whichever side, are completely unacceptable and India condemns them.
The Foreign Minister also noted that ongoing conflicts in various parts of the world are impacting energy, fertilizer, and food supplies, with the greatest impact being felt in developing countries and the Global South.

Ukraine seeks India’s cooperation
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Tsibiha also shared details of the conversation, saying he briefed India on the current situation in Ukraine and the latest developments related to the peace talks. He urged India to play a more active role in peace efforts.
Tsibiha described attacks on merchant vessels in the Black Sea as a serious challenge to global food and energy security. He also briefed the Indian Foreign Minister on the key outcomes of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent visit to the US.
India Emphasizes Dialogue and Diplomacy
India reiterated its support for a solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. New Delhi has consistently urged both sides to de-escalate tensions and return to dialogue.
It is noteworthy that Ukraine has long urged India to use its relationship with Russia to play a constructive role in advancing the peace process. India maintains that a lasting solution to the current crisis is possible only through dialogue and diplomatic efforts.
