Automobile Desk – World EV Day: Every year on 9 September, 'World EV Day' is celebrated across the world. Its primary objective is to encourage the use of environment-friendly electric vehicles in place of conventional fuel-powered vehicles. Over time, this initiative is not limited to just an awareness campaign but has taken the form of a global movement, in which vehicle manufacturers, technology developing companies, governments and aware citizens come on one platform to discuss sustainable mobility.
The initiative was launched in 2020 in collaboration with global media company Green.TV and leading technology firm ABB. The need for a common day was felt to convey the benefits of electric vehicles to the general public and promote clean energy transportation options. From the very first year, the campaign received widespread support from various countries, vehicle manufacturers and organizations developing charging infrastructure around the world.

This global event, being organized in the year 2026, has reached an important stage of its journey. The main theme of this year has been “Switching Electric: Driving Down the Cost of Motoring”. This simply means making electric mobility more economically affordable and practical for common consumers rather than just making it a green option. In the current era, consumers not only consider environmental protection when purchasing a vehicle, but also compare the daily operating expenses and maintenance costs. New research in battery technology, local manufacturing and the introduction of competing models are making EVs more accessible to a wider population.
A significant increase in the acceptance of electric vehicles is also being recorded in the Indian market. Recent data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) clearly shows that the demand for two-wheeler, three-wheeler and four-wheeler electric vehicles has increased rapidly in the country. A total of 2,98,448 electric vehicles were registered across the country in August 2026, showing a strong growth of 52.9 percent compared to the same period last year. Fluctuating conventional fuel prices and low operating expenses of vehicles in the long run have attracted Indian customers towards EVs.
Globally, changes in the transportation sector are being considered essential to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. World EV Day is a means to accelerate this change. Expansion of charging networks, manufacturing of batteries with better range and availability of affordable options will play a decisive role in making electric vehicles a mainstream vehicle in the future.
