Why Is Yashasvi Jaiswal Dropped From IND ODI Squad vs ENG?

A day after India whitewashed Afghanistan in the three-match ODI series, the BCCI announced a 15-man squad to take on England in next month’s three-ODI rubber on India’s tour of the UK.

Star batsman Virat Kohli has been named in the 15-man squad after missing the recent series against Afghanistan owing to a hamstring injury that he had sustained during the IPL final. However, the BCCI confirmed that Kohli’s participation in the England tour is subject to fitness clearance.

As per ESPNcricinfo, Kohli will undergo a fitness assessment at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru this week.

The Men in Blue will be on a tour of the UK from later this week, starting with a two-match T20I series against Ireland in Belfast, slated for June 26 and 28.

India will then fly to England, where the two teams will contest a five-match T20I series from July 1 and the three-match ODI series from July 14.

As India prepares for the 2027 World Cup, the BCCI selectors have named their strongest squad available. The IND vs ENG ODI series will mark the return of Jasprit Bumrah to the ODI format; the spearhead Indian pacer’s last ODI match was the 2023 World Cup final.

IND vs ENG: Is Hardik Pandya picked for ODI series against England?

Hardik has been ruled out of the ODIs against England. The all-rounder suffered a leg strain while training at the CoE in Bengaluru, where he had gone intially to rehab for the back spasms that he suffered during the IPL.

IND ODI Squad vs ENG: Why is Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped?

In a major exclusion, Yashasvi Jaiswal has not been picked for the ODI series against England despite hitting a century in the 3rd ODI against Afghanistan. This is because Kohli has been named in the squad, and he directly replaced Jaiswal.

Jaiswal had earlier replaced Kohli in the squad for the ODI series against Afghanistan. But now with Kohli part of the 15-man squad, and Gill and Rohit being the first-choice openers, Jaiswal has been excluded from the ODI series against England. But, if Kohli fails to clear his fitness tests, then Jaiswal will most certainly be called up again.

Further, in another major decision by the selectors and team management, Ravindra Jadeja didn’t find a place in the squad for the England ODIs. Instead, the selectors have recalled Axar Patel, who was not part of India’s last three ODI series against South Africa, New Zealand, and Afghanistan, and Washington Sundar has retained his place as well. Is this the end of the road for Jadeja in the ODI team?

Harshit Rana, who was included in the squad for the IND vs AFG 3rd ODI after recovering from a right knee lateral meniscus tear, will fly to England.

From the Indian squad that hosted Afghanistan, the players not part of the England ODIs are Jaiswal, Prince Yadav, and Harsh Dubey, while Gurnoor Brar has retained his place after impressive shows in his debut ODI series.
