Zomato-Swiggy service stuck? Gig workers strike against expensive petrol

Gig Workers Strike Petrol Price: across the country Increase in petrol and diesel prices As a result, app-based delivery and cab services are now being impacted. The Gig and Platform Service Workers Union (GIPSWU) has announced a strike against rising fuel prices. In this regard, the union said that the gig workers will keep their apps closed from 12 noon to 5 pm on Friday (May 15, 2026) as a protest.

According to the union, rising petrol and diesel prices are affecting delivery boys and drivers the most. Millions of workers working for companies like Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, Zepto, Ola, Uber and Rapido are completely dependent on bikes and scooters for their livelihood. As a result, their daily savings are steadily shrinking due to rising fuel prices.

Demand rate of Rs.20 per kilometer

The union has demanded that companies fix a service rate of at least Rs 20 per kilometer for gig workers. Unions say that when petrol and diesel prices go up, costs go up immediately, but companies do not increase delivery charges or per-kilometre remuneration. GIPSWU president Seema Singh said delivery workers are already under pressure as they work long hours in the hot sun. Now fuel prices have added to their woes. She said that if the companies do not decide on salary hike, the agitation will be intensified in future.

More than 10 million workers affected

The union’s national coordinator, Nirmal Gorna, said there are approximately 12 million gig and platform workers in the country. This includes those involved in food delivery, grocery delivery, logistics and cab services. She said the increase in petrol and diesel prices directly affects the earnings of these workers, as they have to pay for petrol, vehicle maintenance and other expenses from their own pockets.

Demands were also made to the government

Unions have demanded that the government issue guidelines to increase the remuneration of app-based companies so that rising fuel prices do not fall on the workers. The union says Friday’s protest will be peaceful and aimed at bringing the economic woes of gig workers to the attention of the government and companies.
