New Delhi, August 5, 2026 – The Parliamentary Committee of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has given a 3-day ultimatum to Meta CEO Zuckerberg regarding the video of PM Modi . Zuckerberg has been asked to apologize for temporarily removing the July 23 video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and take action against those responsible for this.
‘Removing PM Modi’s video is an attack on democracy’
The committee, headed by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, said that the removal of the video of PM Modi, representing 1.4 billion Indians, is an “attack on democracy”. The committee added, “If Facebook does not take action against those responsible in this matter, the ‘safe harbor clause’ will be removed. Zuckerberg will have to apologize, otherwise a case may be filed.”

The removal of the ‘safe harbor clause’ will pave the way for direct registration of FIRs against the officials of social media platforms. The committee had warned that the central government would give its approval for this.
Asked to offer an unconditional apology within 3 days
The committee has asked Meta CEO Zuckerberg to issue an unconditional apology within three days for removing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s video. Failing this, the protection provided under Section 79(3) of the IT Act may be withdrawn and he may face action as a publisher.

PM Modi’s post, which was first shared on Instagram and later on Facebook, was his first selfie video. It had a message for ‘Gen Z’, promising strict action against the paper leak. At that time, students were protesting under the leadership of ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP). Meta removed it from Facebook for a while. Meta later apologized, citing a technical glitch as the reason for the incident, but the IT Ministry considered this explanation insufficient.

The IT Ministry summoned Meta after it deleted PM Modi’s video address to Gen Z. Meta told the government that the error was due to the AI’s automated content moderation tool.
