MCD's Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plants will be expanded to boost waste disposal and power generation in Delhi. This will increase the capacity for daily garbage disposal and will also increase power generation. An important proposal related to the expansion of Okhla, Ghazipur and other waste-to-energy plants was approved in the meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House held on Monday. According to the corporation, after increasing the capacity of these plants, a large amount of waste can be disposed of daily.
Electricity generation capacity will increase from 59 to 103 MW.
After increasing the capacity of three power plants, there will be a big increase in the power generation capacity of MCD. At present the corporation produces about 59 MW electricity through these plants. After expansion, this capacity will increase to approximately 103 MW. That means the capacity of WTE plants will increase by about 44 MW. This will give a boost to the process of generating electricity from waste and will provide additional capacity for disposal of the garbage generated daily in Delhi.
Capacity will increase by 1,000 MT per day in Okhla plant
The current capacity of Okhla power plant is 1,550 metric tonnes per day. After expansion, 2,550 metric tons of waste can be processed here daily. Along with this, the power generation capacity of the plant will also increase. The power generation capacity will increase from the current 23 MW to about 30 to 35 MW.
Disposal of up to 2,300 MT of waste in Ghazipur
The capacity of the WTE plant located in Ghazipur will also be increased. At present 1,300 metric tonnes of waste is processed here every day. After expansion, this capacity will increase to 2,300 metric tons per day. Power generation capacity will also increase from 12 MW to 28 MW.
More than 3,000 MT garbage will be processed in Narela-Bawana
There is also a plan to increase the capacity of the power plant located at Narela-Bawana. At present around 2,000 metric tonnes of waste is processed here daily. After expansion, this capacity will increase to more than 3,000 metric tons per day. With this, power generation capacity will increase from 24 MW to about 40 MW per day. According to Mayor Parvesh Wahi, the proceedings of the House lasted for about three and a half hours. During this, proposals related to expansion of power plants and increasing the amount given to RWAs for maintenance of parks were approved. Issues related to stray animals and mosquito-borne diseases in Delhi were also discussed in the meeting.
Councilors and officials discussed ways to deal with these problems. Leader of the House Jai Bhagwan Yadav said that by increasing the capacity of MCD's energy plants, about 3,000 metric tonnes of additional waste can be disposed of, recycled and processed daily. According to him, about 12,500 metric tons of garbage is generated every day in Delhi. After increasing the capacity of the plants, MCD will be able to dispose of about 11,000 metric tonnes of waste daily. Earlier, the corporation was disposing, recycling and processing about 8,100 metric tonnes of waste daily through power plants and other means. After capacity expansion, additional capacity of about 3,000 metric tons per day will be added.
RWA will get Rs 13,500 per acre for maintenance of parks
Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has increased the amount of financial assistance given to RWAs for the maintenance of parks under the corporation. Now an amount of Rs 13,500 per acre will be allotted to RWAs every month for the maintenance of the park. Earlier this amount was Rs 8,660 per acre per month. That means now it has been increased by Rs 4,840. According to MCD, this scheme is operated under Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
Bio-mining accelerates at landfill sites
Many other important proposals were also approved in the MCD House meeting. A proposal related to accelerating the process of biomining in the three major landfill sites of the capital, Bhalswa, Okhla and Ghazipur, was also approved. Apart from this, a proposal related to operation of 200 metric tonne per day capacity biogas-CNG plant at Ghogha Dairy in North-West Delhi was also approved. This plant is proposed to operate for 20 years.
Medical gas supply in hospitals also approved
The House also approved the proposal related to supply of medical gas to MCD's Hindu Rao Hospital and other big hospitals of the corporation. With this, work will be done to strengthen the availability and supply system of medical gas in hospitals.
people troubled by stray animals
Councilors told in the House that people are facing problems due to the presence of stray animals on the roads in their wards. At many places, there were complaints of traffic being affected due to these and creating difficulties for the citizens. The Mayor directed the concerned officials to take necessary steps in the matter and take action to solve the problem.
Opposition demonstration on waterlogging
In the House meeting, the opposition targeted the ruling party over cleanliness and waterlogging. Opposition councilors reached the House in boats to express their protest and raised slogans against the ruling party. Due to the uproar, the proceedings of the House had to be adjourned for about 20 minutes.
Leader of opposition raised questions on cleanliness system
Leader of Opposition Ankush Narang alleged that the situation of cleanliness in Delhi is very worrying. He said that people are troubled by the accumulation of garbage in many areas. He also raised the issue of waterlogging in many parts of the capital after heavy rains on Monday. The opposition alleges that adequate attention was not paid to the drainage system and cleaning of drains, due to which many areas were flooded after the rains.
