New Delhi. Rape case convict Tarun Tejpal, former editor-in-chief of Tehelka magazine, has surrendered in Mapusa court of Goa. The Supreme Court had ordered Tarun Tejpal to surrender. Tarun Tejpal had filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the order of the Bombay High Court. Justice Alok Aradhe's bench had said on August 25 that Tejpal would first have to surrender and only then his petition would be listed for hearing. The surrender period set by the Supreme Court is ending tomorrow.

The Supreme Court bench had said that Tarun Tejpal's appeal would be listed for hearing on September 22, provided Tejpal submits the surrender certificate by then. On August 6 this year, the Bombay High Court had convicted Tarun Tejpal on charges of raping a junior colleague and sentenced him to 10 years in jail. The court had given him four weeks to surrender. The victim alleges that Tarun Tejpal sexually assaulted her in the hotel lift during the Thinkfest event in Goa in November 2013. This case went on from 2017 to 2021 in Mapusa Court of Goa. However, Tarun Tejpal was acquitted by the lower court.
Goa Police had challenged the lower court's decision to acquit Tarun Tejpal in the Bombay High Court. After hearing the arguments of both the parties, the High Court canceled the order of the lower court and convicted Tarun Tejpal of rape and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment. However, after the sentencing, Tarun Tejpal described himself as a victim and also cited his 62 years of age. Now that Tarun Tejpal has surrendered, his petition is expected to be heard on September 22.
