‘Did not go to jail because of not being able to pay ₹5 crore’ Rajpal Yadav breaks silence on loan dispute
Film actor Rajpal Yadav has reacted to the long-discussed loan case against him and the misconception about him going to jail. He clarified that he did not have to go to jail merely because he could not repay a loan of ₹5 crore, but it was a complex legal and financial dispute.
In a recent podcast interview, Rajpal Yadav said that the general perception was that paying ₹5 crore should not be difficult for an actor with such a long career. On this he said that the matter was not only about money, but about principle and a bigger issue. “If it was just a ₹5 crore case, it would have ended in 2012 itself,” he said. “This case was much bigger.”
The controversy dates back to 2010, when Rajpal Yadav had reportedly taken a loan of ₹5 crore for the production of his film ‘Aata Pata Lapata’. The film was released in 2012, but was not successful at the box office, following which the debt issue turned into a legal dispute. Over time, due to interest and other legal complications, this amount increased to about ₹9 crore.
The actor claims that he suffered huge financial losses due to this entire controversy. According to him, the dispute of ₹5 crore further turned into a loss of ₹17 to ₹22 crore. He said that the total cost had increased significantly due to delays and interruptions in the film project.
Responding to the allegations of cheating, Rajpal Yadav said that failure is normal in the film industry and every film is not guaranteed to be successful. He said, “Out of 100 films, 20 work and 80 flop, it does not mean that there is fraud.”
Earlier this year, he was sent to Tihar jail after the Delhi High Court rejected his plea for additional time in a check bounce case related to the case. Later, he got partial payment and interim relief under the legal process. Rajpal Yadav also said that the misunderstandings regarding this matter had damaged his image. He indicated that he will take this legal battle to the end and end it himself.
