Chinese President Xi Jinping is on a visit to America and met US President Donald Trump in Washington. Issues of trade, Taiwan and Artificial Intelligence (AI) were discussed in this meeting. Although efforts have been made to negotiate between the two countries to reduce the tension arising from the trade war, many important issues still remain. After the meeting, the US and China agreed to extend the trade ceasefire for another two months.
There are many pending issues before both the countries on the issue of trade. America has expectations from China regarding restrictions related to purchasing agricultural products, supply of rare minerals and technology. US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said that the promise to buy 25 million tonnes of US soybeans from China is being fulfilled. However, the target of purchasing about $17 billion of other US agricultural products has not yet been met. America has also raised questions on China's performance regarding the supply of rare minerals.
Extending the trade war ceasefire has given both the countries more time for further talks. But, this has not resolved the fundamental issues like tariffs, supply of rare earths and restrictions on technology. Therefore, the current situation is more like extending time for talks rather than a permanent solution.
The second important issue in this meeting is Taiwan. China considers Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes Taiwan's independence. Xi Jinping told the US to oppose Taiwan independence and to approach the issue with caution in his talks with Trump. It became clear from the talks that differences remain between the two countries on the issue of Taiwan.
The issue of Artificial Intelligence also came up specifically in the meeting. The US and China are competing to take the lead in the latest AI technology. While Trump has taken a cautious stance on imposing new restrictions or increasing regulations in the field of AI, Xi Jinping has emphasized that AI should be developed responsibly and remain under human control. Therefore, it was observed that both the countries have different opinions on the development of AI. During the meeting with Trump, both the leaders tried to send a message of reconciliation. But, the decisions that came out of the meeting were more focused on temporarily stopping the trade war and creating space for further talks.
