96 thousand street lights will be upgraded in Delhi, government implemented ‘no performance, no payment’ model

A big step has been taken to improve the street lights system in the capital Delhi. The government has prepared a plan to upgrade about 96 thousand street lights and convert them into LED lights. About Rs 473 crore will be spent on this project. Under this scheme being implemented by the Public Works Department (PWD), the government has adopted the ‘No Performance, No Payment’ model. According to this, payment will be made to the contractors only when the installed light systems work fully as per the set standards. Officials say that this model will increase the accountability of contractors and reduce the possibility of negligence in maintenance. Also, the quality of street lights and their regular functionality will be ensured, which will improve the lighting system in the city.

Usually, in such projects, a huge amount is paid to the contractors before the work starts or in the initial phase, but this time it will not happen. Under the new system, the company which will be given the responsibility of converting 96 thousand street lights into LED and maintaining them, will have to take the responsibility of the entire system. Along with this, the companies will not only be given the responsibility of installing lights but will also be given the responsibility of their maintenance. Payment in this Rs 473 crore project will now be made in installments every month. This payment will depend on whether the street lights are working properly as per the prescribed standards or not.

Preparations have started to upgrade about 96 thousand street lights installed on the PWD road network. At present, there is an old lighting system on these roads, in which due to lack of advanced monitoring system, information about faulty lights is not available immediately. According to officials, at present the malfunction of a street light is known only when a complaint is lodged. Due to this, many times repairs get delayed and people have to face problems.

To overcome this problem, the government is now going to modernize the entire system. Under the proposed scheme, street lights will be upgraded with LED technology at a cost of about Rs 473 crore and the monitoring system will also be improved. According to the report, this project can cover about 1400 km long road network. This will not only save electricity, but faulty lights will also be identified and repaired on time, which will make the city’s lighting system more effective.
