Big comeback of Congress in Kerala: Made a new record by returning to power after 10 years
Knews Desk-In the Kerala Assembly elections 2026, Congress and its allies have returned to power with a stellar performance. In the assembly of about 140 seats, the United Democratic Front (UDF) seems to be getting a lead of about 90 seats, which is indicative of a decisive victory. With this victory, Congress has not only cleared the way to form government in Kerala after 10 years, but has also increased the number of its Chief Ministers in the country to four after 7 years.
What were the major reasons behind Congress’s victory?
There were many strategic and political reasons behind the return of Congress in Kerala. The first and most important reason was to strengthen the alliance. Congress integrated smaller parties at the local level before the elections, which prevented division of votes and provided united support.
The second big factor was unity within the party. Before the elections, the ongoing tussle over the post of Chief Minister was calmed down. Big leaders like KC Venugopal, Ramesh Chennithala and VD Satheesan were seen campaigning together, which sent a positive message to the workers and voters.
Impact of polarization and strategic propaganda
Congress made the growing influence of Bharatiya Janata Party an issue in the elections. Due to this, voters of Muslim and Christian communities were seen uniting in favor of Congress. At the same time, an atmosphere was also created against the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Apart from this, Congress made direct contact with the voters by giving opportunities to new faces and running door-to-door campaigns at the grassroots level. To woo the young and educated class, leaders like Sachin Pilot and Imran Pratapgarhi were fielded.
Why is the record special?
This is the first time since 2019 that four Congress chief ministers will be in power together. Earlier in 2018, there was Congress government in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Punjab. In later years this number was reduced to three due to defeats in several states.
Now after the victory of Kerala in 2026, Congress will have government in four states along with Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana. This is considered an important political achievement for the party.
Political importance and way forward
This victory in Kerala is not just for the Congress to gain power in a state, but it also signals its return to national politics. Especially when Priyanka Gandhi and other big leaders of the organization are also associated with this state.
Overall, this victory of Congress in Kerala is the result of strategy, unity and selection of right issues. In the coming time, this result may also affect the national politics of the party.
