Announcement of white paper on 200 units of free electricity and loan of DMK government
Tamil Nadu’s new Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has started taking big decisions quickly as soon as he assumed office. Soon after taking oath on Sunday (May 10), Vijay signed several important files and took steps towards implementing the election promises. These include a scheme to provide 200 units of free electricity to domestic consumers, formation of a special force for the safety of women and the decision to set up anti-drug units in every district.
But amidst these decisions, Vijay’s biggest political attack was on the former ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government. After becoming the Chief Minister, Vijay announced that his government will release a white paper on the financial position of the state between 2021 and 2026. Vijay said, “The DMK government has left us a debt of Rs 10 lakh crore. I want to tell the people of Tamil Nadu how much economic burden the previous government has left on the state.”
According to political analysts, this statement clearly indicates that the Vijay government may aggressively target DMK’s economic policies and administration in the coming times.
In his first address as Chief Minister, Vijay promised the public to provide transparent administration. He said that his government will try to fulfill every promise made in the election manifesto. “If you give me support and opportunity, I will try my best to fulfill all my promises,” he said. On this statement of Vijay, the supporters present at the function applauded loudly.
Vijay also indirectly targeted AIADMK. He said his government will not do “closed room politics” and all decisions will be taken in a transparent manner. It is noteworthy that after the election results, there was discussion about the possibility of AIADMK forming government with the external support of DMK.
The Chief Minister made it clear that education, food supply, health services and women’s safety will be among the priorities of his government. However, he did not announce a detailed roadmap for these areas. Vijay also clarified his position on the questions arising regarding political stability. He said that there will be no multiple power centers in the government and only he will have the right to take final decisions in the administration.
His statement is also considered important because his government has come to power with a very slight majority in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. The government has the support of many small parties. In his address, Vijay also showed a soft attitude towards political opponents. “Those who criticized me and insulted me are also my people,” he said. He talked about taking everyone along in the development of Tamil Nadu.
Vijay also gave a special message to his supporters, especially the youth and workers active on social media. He said, “You are my life. Vijay Mama will always do good for my young Nanba and Nanbi.” “Nanba” and “Nanbi” mean friend in Tamil and Vijay’s fans are often identified by this name.
He also thanked the workers of his party TVK and the supporters who ran the digital campaign. Vijay said, “Without you guys I am nothing. Thank you very much to my dear virtual warriors and all the workers.”
Political experts believe that through the decisions taken immediately after becoming the Chief Minister, Vijay wants to give the message that his government is fast-working and serious in implementing the election promises. Now everyone’s eyes will be on how his government implements these announcements in the coming days.
