Youth Arrested From Pathankot For Monitoring Army Activities
Punjab Police has arrested a youth from Pathankot for allegedly spying for Pakistan. According to the police, the accused was monitoring the activities of the army and paramilitary forces on National Highway-44 through internet-based CCTV cameras and the live footage was being sent to handlers based in Pakistan.
The arrested accused has been identified as Baljeet Singh, who is said to be a resident of Chakk Dhariwal village of Pathankot. Preliminary investigation by the police has revealed that he had installed an internet connected CCTV camera in a shop located near a bridge on NH-44 Pathankot-Jammu Highway.
According to police officials, this camera was strategically installed at a place from where the movement of army and paramilitary forces vehicles could be monitored. It is alleged that the accused was sending the live feed of this camera to the handlers sitting in Pakistan.
During interrogation, Baljeet Singh allegedly admitted that he had installed this camera in the month of January. Police claim that he was getting instructions from an unknown person present in Dubai. According to the investigating agencies, Rs 40 thousand was also given to the accused in return for this work.

Police have recovered CCTV cameras and related technical equipment from the possession of the accused. Now the security agencies are trying to find out how big was the network of the accused and whether he was part of any organized espionage module.
This case has also increased the concern of security agencies because last month also Punjab Police had busted two espionage modules supported by Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI. In those cases, Chinese-made solar-powered high-tech CCTV cameras were being used to send live footage of sensitive military targets to Pakistan.
Investigative agencies believe that in recent years, espionage efforts through technical devices have increased in the areas adjacent to the border. Efforts are being made to collect sensitive information using internet-based cameras, drones and encrypted communication platforms.
At present the police and central security agencies are interrogating the accused. Officials say that foreign contacts, funding channels and possible associates will also be investigated in the case. It is also being ascertained for how long the accused shared information about the army’s activities.
