Kerala Chief Minister Secretary appointment controversy: Politics heats up, BJP

Amit Malviya has recently given a statement regarding the appointment of a senior IAS officer in West Bengal. He said that this appointment has been made as per the established rules and service traditions and there is no irregularity in it.

New Delhi: India’s political debate has once again intensified over the issue of administrative appointments and institutional fairness. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over the appointment of Secretary to the Chief Minister of Kerala. BJP has raised questions on the role of the opposition, calling this matter an example of “selective outrage”.

Amit Malviya’s allegations against Rahul Gandhi

BJP’s National Information and Technology Department chief Amit Malviya criticized Rahul Gandhi in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He said Rahul Gandhi’s stance shows “double standards” regarding administrative appointments. Malviya wrote in his post that Rahul Gandhi had raised questions regarding administrative appointments in West Bengal, but he is silent on similar appointments in Kerala. According to him, this raises questions on “institutional decorum and impartiality”.

Comparison of appointments of West Bengal and Kerala

In his statement, Amit Malviya compared the administrative appointments of the two states. He claimed that in West Bengal, senior IAS officers were appointed on the basis of service traditions and seniority, whereas in Kerala, appointments to the post of Secretary to the Chief Minister were made which according to him was not in accordance with the “seniority order”.

Malviya also alleged that in some states, officers are posted on important posts on the basis of political loyalty, thereby affecting administrative impartiality.

Secretary appointment issue in Kerala

At the center of the controversy is Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Ratan U as Satishan’s secretary. Kelkar has been appointed. It is being told that he is an IAS officer of 2003 batch and has been given the post of Chief Electoral Officer of the state as well as responsibility in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. BJP questioned this dual role, saying that it could be against the spirit of institutional balance and electoral freedom.
