Court’s decision: Asaram’s life sentence remains intact, he will have to surrender.
Jodhpur. Jodhpur bench of Rajasthan High Court has refused to grant relief to Asaram in the case of sexual harassment of a minor student of his own ashram and has upheld his life imprisonment. The division bench of Justice Arun Monga and Justice Yogendra Kumar Purohit gave this decision on Wednesday.
While hearing the appeals of three accused including Asaram, the court made it clear that there will be no change in the sentence given by the lower court. Although the court acquitted him of gangrape charges, his conviction on other serious charges has been upheld. Also, the court has ordered Asaram to surrender immediately.
The decision came on Wednesday on the appeal filed in the High Court against the sentence of life imprisonment till natural life of Asaram alias Asumal in the sexual exploitation case. The division bench of the High Court has not completely acquitted Asaram in its decision.
His appeal to cancel his sentence has been rejected, but he has pleaded not guilty under the sections related to non-bailable offense of POCSO Act, gang rape and conspiracy to commit crime of IPC. The division bench has upheld the decision given by the lower court regarding rape of Indian Penal Code, sexual exploitation of POCSO and other sections including JJ Act, that is, the sentence will remain intact. The division bench has completely acquitted Asaram’s servants Sharat Chandra and Shilpi of charges.
