The Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army paid tribute to the bravery of Late Colonel Sonam Wangchuk and the soldiers of 3 Ladakh Scouts in the Battle of Chorbat La in Batalik Sector on 30 May 1999 during the Kargil War.

The Army post further said, ‘Major Sonam Wangchuk and the brave soldiers of 3 Ladakh Scouts engraved their names in golden letters in history during the battle of Chorbat La in Batalik sector. Facing sub-zero temperatures, snow storms, enemy fire and difficult terrain, Major Wangchuk led from the front. They established observation posts at SONAM-1 and SONAM-2 and eliminated the enemy. After this, Pakistani troops were prevented from establishing control over the ridgeline of the Ladakh mountain range. India remembers him with pride and gratitude.”

‘Snow Warriors’ launched ‘Operation Vijay’

The battle of Chorbat La, fought on extremely high peaks and in snowy terrain, was part of the broader ‘Operation Vijay’ launched by India to recapture strategic positions captured by infiltrators during the Kargil war. The Ladakh Scouts, popularly known as the ‘Snow Warriors’, played a vital role in the high Himalayan war during this campaign and conducted operations along the LOC in some of the toughest and most adverse conditions in the world.

The campaign ran amidst harsh weather up to 60 degrees Celsius and thin air.

According to official information, in the first week of May 1999, heavy infiltration by Pakistani Army and infiltrators was detected in the Kargil and Dras sectors. After which Ladakh Scouts were among the first units that were deployed in Batalik sector. Which carried out several attacks and reconnaissance operations to drive the enemy from key mountain ridgelines. The campaign was often conducted at altitudes of more than 18,000 feet under heavy artillery fire and in harsh weather and thin air of up to 60 degrees Celsius.
