There was controversy regarding 53 kg category

Before the trials started, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had asked Vinesh Phogat to be allowed to play only in the 50 kg category. The federation’s argument was that he had participated in the same weight category in recent international tournaments. Vinesh opposed this decision and demanded to give herself a chance in the 53 kg category. Later WFI changed its decision and allowed him to play in 53 kg category. During weighing, his weight was found to be 53.9 kg, after which he was included in this category.
