Attack on Abhishek Banerjee who came to meet the victims of post-poll violence
Kolkata. Amid political tension in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee faced strong protests and violence during his visit to Sonarpur on Saturday. He had arrived there to meet a family of a victim of post-poll violence, but upon his arrival a group of locals started protesting.
According to eyewitnesses, the mob raised slogans of “chor-chor” against them and reportedly threw stones, eggs and shoes. During this, some people also tried to push and assault. When the situation worsened, the security personnel surrounded him and took him to a safe place and made him wear a helmet and take him inside the house of the affected family.
After the incident, Abhishek Banerjee alleged that the entire incident was politically motivated and the opposition parties were behind it. He said that the police and administration did not reach the spot in time, due to which the situation worsened. He also claimed that he was subjected to violence, which left him with injuries and his shirt was also torn.
Banerjee said that she has video evidence of the incident and will take the matter to the Governor, the High Court and, if necessary, the Supreme Court. Accusing the administration of negligence, he said that if help did not reach despite the information of the security forces, then it raises serious questions.
TMC also reacted to this incident and called it an attack on democratic values. The party alleged that the attack was politically motivated and part of the opposition’s “politics of violence and fear”.
At the same time, local people say that there was dissatisfaction and resentment in the area for a long time, which came out in the form of this incident. At present, the administration has said to start investigation into the matter and additional security forces have been deployed in the area.
