Many Feared Trapped As 5-Storeyed Building Collapses Near Metro Station In South Delhi

New Delhi: Dozens of people are feared trapped under the debris of a five-storeyed building which collapsed in south Delhi’s Mehrauli area on Saturday evening.

Rescue teams are working on a war footing to search for survivors.

At least four people have been extricated alive so far. Their condition was not immediately known.

Authorities have not yet confirmed how many people were inside the building when it came crashing down.

The building is located in the busy Saeedulajab area, near Saket Metro station.

The building collapses in the aftermath of a massive dust storm which hit Delhi-NCR. Strong winds swept across the national Capital and surrounding areas, followed by spells of rain and thunderstorm.

The Delhi Fire Service received information about the collapse at around 7.44 pm.

On reaching the site, Fire service personnel realised the scale of the mishap, and called for reinforcements to deploy additional manpower. Senior police officers also rushed to the location.

A large-scale emergency response saw firefighters, police personnel and rescue teams using every possible machine and tool in an effort to cut through the rubble of concrete and search for signs of life.

Witnesses said they heard a loud crash as the multi-storeyed structure came down, sending dust and debris across the surrounding area.
