A heart-wrenching case of dowry harassment has come to light from Jaitpur area of the capital Delhi. It is alleged that due to constant harassment, beating and demand for money from her in-laws, 23-year-old married woman Roshni ended her life by hanging herself. There is mourning in the family after the incident, while the family members have made serious allegations against the husband and in-laws.
Gave cash and gold in marriage
Roshni, originally from Samastipur, Bihar, was married to Delhi resident Vikas Kumar Jha on 21 November 2023. Family members say that she had given dowry in the marriage beyond her means. The groom was also given Rs 2.5 lakh in cash and 5 tola gold and other gifts. After marriage, Roshni started living with her husband in Delhi.
Everything was fine in the beginning, then the harassment started
According to the family, everything remained normal for the first one and a half year of marriage. During this time Roshni also gave birth to a son. But with the passage of time the behavior of husband and mother-in-law started changing. It is alleged that Roshni was constantly pressurized to demand additional money and was mentally and physically harassed over small matters.
‘Sent money again and again to save daughter’
Roshni’s father Ram Chandra Jha says that seeing his daughter’s problems, he helped his in-laws many times as per his financial capacity. Despite this, their demands did not end and the atrocities on Roshni continued to increase.

The family members have alleged that Vikas Kumar Jha would often return home drunk and brutally beat Roshni. Once he had demanded money citing his mother’s cancer treatment, which the family somehow fulfilled. Later Roshni got information about her husband’s alleged love affair. When he protested, he was beaten again.
Apologized and brought him home, received news of death the next day.
Fed up with the constant harassment, Roshni went away with her relatives for some time. Later the husband apologized and brought her back home and assured her not to behave like this in future. But this promise could not last even for a day. On May 29, Roshni’s family received information that she was found hanging in her room. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Dowry death case registered, police engaged in investigation
As soon as the information about the incident was received, Roshni’s family reached Delhi and registered a case against her husband, mother-in-law and other in-laws at Jaitpur police station under dowry death, harassment and other serious sections. The police have conducted post-mortem of the body and handed it over to the family members and have started investigating the entire matter. Roshni’s death has once again raised questions on the social evil like dowry, which snatched away her mother from an innocent child and her daughter from a family.
