New Delhi. India’s legendary shooter Jaspal Rana said goodbye to the world on Friday at the age of 49. While returning from Germany on June 1, Rana’s health deteriorated on the flight. On reaching Delhi, he was admitted to a private hospital, where a stent was inserted in his heart. Despite this he could not be saved. There is a wave of mourning in the entire country due to the demise of Indian shooting legend and coach Jaspal Rana. Many leaders including the Prime Minister and the President have expressed grief over his demise.

Let us tell you that Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and veteran shooter Jaspal Rana have an old relationship. Their friendship started from the shooting range. Both of them together learned the nuances of shooting from Narayan Singh Rana. Perhaps this was the reason that after contesting the Lok Sabha elections from BJP, Jaspal Rana also campaigned for Congress as a star campaigner in 2012.

Expressing grief over the news of his demise, Rahul Gandhi also wrote that he was deeply saddened by the demise of Jaspal Rana, India’s best shooting champion and mentor who inspired many generations of athletes. His dedication to great work and his immense contribution to Indian sports has left an indelible mark on our country. My deepest condolences to his family, loved ones and the entire sporting fraternity. The relationship between Rahul Gandhi and Jaspal Rana was related to shooting. Jaspal Rana remained close to Rahul Gandhi since the shooting days. From sports field to politics, their friendship was special.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from Tehri Garhwal parliamentary constituency on BJP ticket, although he was not successful. After this, during the 2012 assembly elections, he was also seen as a star campaigner for Congress. Jaspal died during treatment in Delhi on Friday. He was 49 years old. Rana was returning to India after the ISSF World Cup held in Munich, but his health deteriorated in the flight itself. He was taken directly to the hospital from Delhi airport and died while undergoing treatment for a heart ailment.

Rana’s demise is a huge blow to the Indian shooting world. Rana contributed for more than three decades, both as a champion player and coach. He won several medals at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships and made his mark as one of the most successful shooters in the country. The government honored him with the prestigious Dronacharya Award in 2020 for his immense contribution in grooming the next generation of shooters.
