Tamil Nadu: Gas leak in seafood factory, 7 women died; 40 hospitalized

A tragic accident took place in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Seven women workers died and more than 40 fell ill due to ammonia gas leak at a private seafood export factory located in Kannigaipair area near Periyapalayam. The affected laborers have been admitted to various hospitals, where many are undergoing treatment.

 

According to the police, about 120 migrant laborers lived in the factory premises. These included many male and female employees from Assam, Odisha and Jharkhand. Since Sunday was a holiday, most of the workers were present in their rooms. Then suddenly ammonia gas started leaking from the seafood processing unit. Within no time there was a commotion in the entire campus and people started running here and there.

As the gas spread, many workers started having trouble breathing. Some people complained of heartburn, dizziness and nervousness. The condition of many employees deteriorated so much that they had to be immediately taken to the hospital. Bleeding from the mouth and nose of some people has also been reported. Seven women laborers died during treatment.

Condition of nine laborers critical

Officials said that the condition of nine laborers remains critical. He has been referred to Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, Chennai for better treatment. Other affected workers are also undergoing treatment in different hospitals. The administration has instructed hospitals to provide all necessary medical facilities.

Three-member committee formed to investigate

As soon as the news of the incident was received, teams of police, fire brigade, health department and revenue department immediately reached the spot. On the request of the district administration, the special chemical disaster response team of NDRF was also called. This team of about 30 members got involved in relief and rescue work with special equipment.

 

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has directed to form a three-member committee to investigate the accident. The committee will have to submit a preliminary report within 24 hours and a final report within three days. Besides, instructions have also been given to the officials for better treatment of the injured and constant monitoring of relief operations.
