Women cops on DTC buses, dedicated police stations planned

In a major initiative aimed at enhancing the safety of women in the national capital, the Delhi government is set to deploy women police personnel on DTC Ladies Special buses operating along vulnerable, high-footfall routes. The initiative will be supported by women Home Guard marshals. Additionally, following the inauguration of Delhi’s first women-only police station, the government plans to establish similar dedicated police stations in every police district to exclusively deal with crimes and complaints involving women and children.
The decisions were reviewed by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu during a high-level meeting attended by the Commissioner of Police and the Secretary (Transport). The review was held in line with the LG’s directions issued on June 3 to strengthen security arrangements for women commuters using public transport.
Officials informed the Lieutenant Governor that the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) had identified routes with a high concentration of women passengers and increased vulnerability, particularly during peak commuting hours. Based on this assessment, women police personnel will be deployed on Ladies Special buses operating on these routes to enhance passenger safety.
The Commissioner of Police assured the Lieutenant Governor that Delhi Police would provide the required personnel for the initiative. Women Home Guard marshals will also be stationed on these buses to further reinforce security and assist commuters.
Calling for a zero-tolerance policy against harassment, Sandhu directed officials to ensure the strict implementation of all safety measures and emphasised the need for a visible security presence on the ground.
Officials said the deployment of women police personnel is expected to deter harassment, discourage anti-social elements, and provide women commuters with greater confidence while boarding, travelling on, and disembarking from buses.
In the first phase, the Ladies Special buses will operate on identified routes connecting remote areas of Outer Delhi and will be staffed entirely by women personnel, in accordance with the Lieutenant Governor’s directives.
As part of a technology-driven safety initiative, panic button alerts installed in DTC buses will be integrated with Delhi Police’s 112 emergency response system. The integration is expected to enable quicker coordination between transport authorities and law enforcement agencies, ensuring prompt assistance to women passengers in emergency situations.
The Commissioner of Police also informed the meeting that the framework for dedicated women-only police stations has been finalised. The first such police station has already been inaugurated at the Subzi Mandi police station complex in North Delhi and is staffed entirely by women personnel. Similar facilities will be established across all police districts in the capital to exclusively handle offences and complaints related to women and children.
The proposed measures form part of the Delhi government’s broader strategy to strengthen women’s safety through enhanced policing, technology-enabled emergency response, and specialised institutional support across the city.
