Weekend court started in Delhi to settle pending traffic challans, 22 benches will be active in 11 districts.

To reduce the increasing burden of pending traffic challans in Delhi, the system of weekend court is now being started. Under this, special hearings will be held in all the district courts of Delhi on the second Saturday and all Sundays of every month. Under this system, the timing of the courts has been fixed from 10 am to 4 pm. A total of 22 benches have been constituted in 11 districts, which will hear and dispose of pending challan cases expeditiously. Each bench will be able to dispose of around 700 pending challans per day. The objective of this initiative is to reduce the pressure of pending cases in the courts and ensure faster resolution of cases related to traffic challans.

This system will prove to be especially beneficial for the employed people, who are not able to go to the court on working days to settle the cases related to challans. Only compoundable traffic challans will be heard in these weekend courts. Such challans can be settled by paying fine, which will enable quick resolution of cases. At the same time, non-compoundable challans will not be heard in these special courts. Such cases require judicial investigation as they involve violations of a serious nature.

‘Weekend Traffic Court’ will be started from July 5, 2026 to settle pending traffic challans. This system is expected to make disposal of challan related cases faster and easier. The facility to download challan slip on the portal of Delhi Traffic Police will be available from 10 am on June 25. During this time, drivers will be able to download their challan slip and will also be able to choose the court premises, date and time slot of appearance. Under this process, two time slots have been fixed from 10 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 4 pm. Apart from this, challan payment can also be done through UPI and Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), which will make the payment process more simple and faster.

Under the new system, a total of 22 benches will be deployed in 11 district courts. These benches will hear pending challan cases and dispose of them expeditiously. Each bench will be able to dispose of around 700 challans per day. Although evening courts and Lok Adalats are already operating for disposal of traffic challans, the backlog of cases is continuously increasing due to difficulties faced by working people in finding time on weekdays.

According to the data, a total of 42.2 lakh challans and notices have been issued by Delhi Traffic Police so far in the year 2026, out of which 96.5 percent i.e. more than 40.7 lakh cases are still pending. Automatic challans are issued by identifying vehicles through cameras installed in Delhi. Apart from this, in cases like overspeeding, vehicles are monitored through technical system and online challans and notices are sent.
